Project Overview

C.S. Lewis wrote in An Experiment in Criticism “…we seek an enlargement of our being. We want to be more than ourselves. Each of us by nature sees the whole world from one point of view with perspective and selectiveness peculiar to himself….We want to see with other eyes, to imagine with other imaginations, to feel with other hearts, as well as with our own.”

Evolved is an original story, set in the near future. Some of the world’s population have evolved giving them unique abilities. The “evolved” are feared and seen as a threat to humanity, despite only wanting to live their lives without any trouble. A silent war between the “evolved” and the humans rages on as the fear of change overtakes the world.

I started this project by writing a script which could be used in a feature length film. Due to time constraints, it became clear I would only be able to film a trailer for the script. The next step was storyboarding and logistics planning. I worked with the Flagler College theater department and was able to cast a group of very talented actors to play each role. The department also assisted in providing various costume pieces.

Before filming the trailer, I scouted locations and planned out lighting and camera angles. I acted as camera operator and director during each shoot, occasionally requiring an assistant. Voice over was recorded and edited using Adobe Audition.

In post production, I put together the trailer in Adobe Premiere, using Adobe After Effects to add special effects. The credit sequence would be what is seen at the end of the film. It was primarly made in Adobe After Effects.

The poster series is designed to be used as promotional pieces for the film. I photographed each actor and used Adobe Photoshop to edit and manipulate the photos.

The tone of the film is shown in the desaturated color palette. Blues and reds are the main color of the film’s branding. Blue is usually a calming color and red is typically used to represent anger.

In this case, Red is used to signify the antagonists of the story and blue is used with the protagonists. Smoke is utilized to convey an eerie and mysterious feeling. Metallic text brings in a clinical, scientific tone to the campaign. This feeling is used to represent the alienation of the “evolved” and the fear felt by the humans.
