Project Overview
Saul Bass said that “audience involvement with a film should begin with its first frame.” In his time, this meant during the title sequence. Bass was a graphic designer and filmmaker who breathed life into the titles of films. Now, with title sequence much more common and technology ever growing, the movie-goer experience begins before the viewer ever enters the theater. This is achieved through advertising and promoting the film before its release date.
Delicate Stages is based on an original story, written by Emma Barnes, a.k.a Analiese Saxon. In Delicate Stages, a prisoner of war returns home but struggles with PTSD. His best friend suggests he speak with someone who can help mend his mind. A romance slowly builds between the soldier and the girl who is tasked with helping him.
Ice plays a big part in the soldier’s PTSD which is why it’s a main part of the project. The text in the title sequence is meant to appear stuck under the ice, much like the soldier feels stuck in his memories of past trauma. The gold elements of the project are symbolic of a Japanese artform called Kintsugi or Kintsukuroi. In this artform, gold lacquer is used to repair broken pottery. This process not only restores the use of the pottery, but it also increases the value of it. The woman in Delicate Stages has a piece of Kintsugi pottery but the idea behind the artform also aligns with the theme of the story. The broken pottery could be seen as a symbol of the soldier and the woman who helps him is like the gold lacquer. She repairs his mind but he is a better man then he was before the war because she is now in his life.
The objective of the project is to create an advertising campaign that will increase awareness and interest in the film. Social media ads and promotional posters are used to reach the young adult audience. This demographic relies on instant gratification which means the campaign needs to appeal to them quickly and efficiently. The title sequence is designed to carry the theme from the campaign into the film. By the time the viewer sees the title sequence, they will be familiar with the promotional style and theme. This will allow them to enter the mindset of the film more easily.
